House Subcommittee Restores VOA Greek Service Funding

WASHINGTON, DC — The American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA), the leading association for the nation’s 1.3 million American citizens of Greek ancestry, and Philhellenes, commends Rep. Nita Lowey (D-18-NY), chairwoman, House Appropriations Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations, and Related Agencies; and applauds the subcommittee for restoring funding to Voice of America’s Greek Service in the FY08 federal budget, announced National President Gus J. James, II.

“We commend Chairwoman Lowey for recognizing and understanding the importance VOA’s Greek Service has to our community and to U.S. interests abroad,” said James. “We applaud the subcommittee for restoring the funding, and we will continue to monitor its status throughout the balance of the appropriations process.”

The full House Appropriations Committee is scheduled to take-up the State, Foreign Operations, and Related Agencies spending bill the week of June 11, possibly on Tues. June 12.

In March, AHEPA worked with Rep. John Sarbanes to circulate a letter among House colleagues asking them to support restoration of funding. It was signed by six representatives: Reps. Sarbanes, Bilirakis, Maloney, Space, Lofgren, and McGovern.

Moreover, AHEPA submitted written testimony to the subcommittee that outlined the merits of the Greek Service and requested the funding, totaling $480,000, be restored.
