AHEPA Mourns Passing of Archbishop Christodoulos

Archbishop Christodoulos

WASHINGTON, D.C. -
Ike Gulas, international president of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA), the leading association for the nation’s 1.3 million American citizens of Hellenic ancestry and Philhellenes, issued the following statement about the passing of Archbishop Christodoulos:

“We are saddened to learn of the passing of His Beatitude Christodoulos, archbishop of Greece’s Orthodox Church, who bravely battled liver cancer.

We were fortunate to have been granted many audiences with His Beatitude to discuss ways in which we can work together to project and protect Hellenism and Orthodoxy abroad.

In 2001, Archbishop Christodoulos received the late John Paul II, the first pope to visit Greece in 1,300 years. Again, in 2006, His Beatitude visited the Vatican to meet with Pope Benedict XVI and signed a joint declaration calling for inter-religious dialogue.

May His Memory Be Eternal.”

AHEPA was established in 1922, by visionary Greek-Americans to protect all from prejudice originating from the KKK, and in its history, AHEPA has joined with the NAACP and B’nai B’rith International to fight discrimination. The mission of the AHEPA family is to promote the ideals of Hellenism, education, philanthropy, civic responsibility and family and individual excellence.  For more information about AHEPA, or how to join, please contact AHEPA Headquarters, 202.232.6300, or visit www.ahepa.org.
