Archbishop Proclaims May 18 as AHEPA Sunday

Encyclical is annual observance and recognition

of AHEPA’s good work

WASHINGTON -- His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios has proclaimed May 18, 2008 as “AHEPA Sunday” in the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.

“This prominent organization has promoted education, civic responsibility and philanthropy since its founding in 1922, and it is fitting that we show our honor and support for the AHEPA on this day in our liturgical calendar, the Sunday of the Paralytic,” stated the archbishop in the Encyclical.

“We are very grateful and honored by the kind words His Eminence used to describe the hard work that our members carry-out on a daily basis,” said Supreme President Ike Gulas.  “We felt especially humbled that His Eminence chose the Sunday of the Paralytic to draw a parallel to the spirit of compassion that all members of the AHEPA Family possess in attending to the needs of others.”

AHEPA is the largest Greek-American association in the world with chapters in the United States, Canada, Greece, Cyprus, and sister chapters in Australia and New Zealand. It was established in 1922 by visionary Greek Americans to protect Hellenes from prejudice originating from the KKK, and in its history, AHEPA joined with the NAACP and B'nai B'rith International to fight discrimination.

The mission of the AHEPA family is to promote the ancient Greek ideals of education, philanthropy, civic responsibility and family and individual excellence through community service and volunteerism.
