AHEPA Commends Alexi Giannoulias for His Rise in Politics, Community Service Initiatives
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Supreme President Ike Gulas issued the following statement on The Honorable Alexi Giannoulias, state treasurer, Illinois, speaking at the Democratic National Convention this evening: “We congratulate a fellow Greek-American, Alexi Giannoulias, for being selected as a speaker at the Democratic National Convention,” said Gulas. “His place in the national spotlight is a testament to his rising star in the field of politics. It is also uplifting to see the pride he has displayed in his Greek heritage, and his strong desire to give back to the community."
Giannoulias became the youngest state treasurer in the nation having been elected at the age of 30. He founded and chairs the AG Foundation, a not-for-profit charity that donates money to treat child-related illnesses, curb property and assists disaster relief organizations. “Giannoulias’ demonstrated commitment to community service and the strides he has taken as a public servant are to be applauded,” said Gulas. ### AHEPA is the largest Greek-American association in the world with chapters in the United States, Canada, Greece, Cyprus, and sister chapters in Australia and New Zealand. It was established in 1922 by visionary Greek Americans to protect Hellenes from prejudice originating from the KKK, and in its history, AHEPA joined with the NAACP and B'nai B'rith International to fight discrimination. The mission of the AHEPA family is to promote the ancient Greek ideals of education, philanthropy, civic responsibility and family and individual excellence through community service and volunteerism.
