WASHINGTON, D.C. - It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Supreme Athletic Director Brother Dr. Monthe N. Kofos, an AHEPA Lifetime Achievement recipient, who died on Monday, September 15, 2008.

Dr. Kofos, a Life Member of Marlboro Chapter No. 105, is credited for the rejuvenation of the AHEPA Athletic Program following his election to Athletic Director in 1969. For the next 40 years under Dr. Kofos, and with the assistance of a team of outstanding directors underneath him, the Athletic Program prospered. National and regional basketball, softball, golf, and bowling tournaments were established and continue to be held today. Most recently, at the Athens Supreme Convention, we witnessed the revival of the AHEPA All-Star Basketball Program that sent an AHEPA team to Greece to play a series of exhibition games. This program originated in 1970 under Dr. Kofos' watchful eye. In 1987, Dr. Kofos created the AHEPA Booster Club Athletic Fund to assist with the implementation of these athletic programs, helping them to be first-rate athletic events. However, the crown jewel of the AHEPA Athletic Program is the AHEPA Hellenic Athletic Hall of Fame which was established in 1975. It includes greats such as Harry Agganis, Alex Karras, Jim Londos, and countless others. Finally, the Athletic Award Program honors those scholar-athletes at the high school and collegiate levels who excel both at sports and academics.

"Today, the AHEPA family has lost a giant," said Supreme President Ike Gulas. "We are forever indebted to Dr. Kofos for helping us to truly fulfill the 'family and individual excellence' facet of our mission. He was an outstanding Ahepan in every sense of the meaning and we will miss him."

May His Memory Be Eternal.

We will pass along funeral arrangements once we learn of them

AHEPA is the largest Greek-American association in the world with chapters in the United States, Canada, Greece, Cyprus, and sister chapters in Australia and New Zealand. It was established in 1922 by visionary Greek Americans to protect Hellenes from prejudice originating from the KKK, and in its history, AHEPA joined with the NAACP and B'nai B'rith International to fight discrimination.

The mission of the AHEPA family is to promote the ancient Greek ideals of education, philanthropy, civic responsibility and family and individual excellence through community service and volunteerism.
