CALENDAR OF MAJOR EVENTS FOR 2007-2008

Chapter Planning in Process.

During this current term, Chapter #31 will continue to emphasize and promote programs that will involve younger members in the structure and operation of the Chapter. Along with “networking” and the “pursuit of excellence”, we intend to focus on the “continuing education” of our members, young and old, in all areas of the arts and sciences. Special attention will be directed to Hellenic studies, ideals and traditions.

·           One effort is to encourage the individual members of our Chapter, young and old, to undertake a field of study in whatever area might be of interest to that member and then to report back to the entire Chapter. We believe that individual growth is achieved from a disciplined effort to study interesting new fields and then by sharing the fruits of knowledge gained with other members of the Chapter.

·           Likewise, it is important in the view of the Chapter that we all recognize Hellenism as a critical element of Americanism and one which can provide a sound philosophy for future growth.

·           So, too, the Chapter must encourage and emphasize to our young members the:

a.       Importance of education, information and knowledge to those entering the job market as well as to those wishing to advance their career;

b.       Growing need for athletic and physical expression as an essential element of good health for both young and old, and

c.       Value of community service as a vital element of growth.

Recent Accomplishments.

·           Chapter #31 is proud of its members who have received honors and public recognition. While the accomplishments of AHEPAns in the service of our Order are noted and published in the AHEPAN magazine or newsletter, we seldom read or hear about honors received outside the AHEPA family. We believe that such honors should be recognized with pride and we plan to do so in the future.

·           In the belief that our commitment to our departed Brother AHEPAns who have fallen asleep in the Lord includes periodic greetings and sincere concern for the welfare of their widows, Chapter #31 will include them as often as possible in our social events. For example, the Chapter invited all of them as its guests to the annual Christmas dinner held jointly with Hermione Chapter of the Daughters of Penelope. Likewise, the Chapter is seeking to fund a system to ensure that each of these ladies will continue to receive the AHEPAn magazine as well as copies of the Chapter’s newsletter.

Regular meeting dates.

A regular monthly business meeting is held on the second Tuesday of every month, at 7:30 pm, generally at Saint Sophia Cathedral, 36th street & Massachusetts Ave. N.W., Washington, D.C.20007 or St George Greek Orthodox Church, 7701 Bradley Boulevard, Bethesda, MD 20817. All lectures, seminars and workshops are generally held at Saint George Orthodox Church at 7701 Bradley Blvd. Bethesda, MD.

Periodic dinner or social meetings with members, often held together with spouses and Daughters of Penelope, are held on the fourth Tuesday of the month at different local restaurants. The Chapter is also exploring the idea of holding luncheon meetings and using other locations in an effort to encourage attendance and participation. You are most welcome to join us. For a dinner social meeting, please call one of the Officers to determine the time and place.

Indeed, all AHEPAns are most welcome! Non-AHEPAns and those who might like to join the AHEPA are warmly encouraged to attend the social hour after a meeting for refreshments and good conversation.

No scheduled meetings are held during the summer months.
