History
The Daughters of Penelope is the Senior Women's Auxiliary of the Order of AHEPA. It was founded on November 16, 1929, in San Francisco, California, through the efforts of AHEPAN Dr. Emanuel Apostolides. The first Chapter, EOS, was organized with 25 Charter Members. In 1931, Alexandra Apostolides Sonnenfeld became the first Grand President.
With the help of AHEPA Chapter 31, Hermione Chapter 11 was organized and chartered on April 26, 1934. The Charter Members were: Ann Bathis, Helen Bratino, Frances Catsonis, Calliope Chaconas, Mary Doutisoukos, Mary Lagou, Theodora Lambros, Betty Nicholson, Agnes Papanicolaou, Platonia Pappas, Irene Peratino, Dolio Placos, Helen Placos, Virginia Plakos and Renee Tsilis. The first meeting was held in the YMCA on "K" Street, N.W., in Washington, D.C.
Programs
Through its history, Hermione Chapter members have supported all District 3 and National DOP and AHEPA-sponsored and mandated charities. In recent years, these charities have included AHEPA and DOP scholarships, Susan B. Komen Cancer Foundation, Childhelp U.S.A., St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Cooley's Anemia, Autism Project in Halandri, Greece, the LAM Foundation, Maids of Athena, Multiple Myeloma Foundation, Multiple Sclerosis Association, Papanicolaou Cancer Center, Pediatric Aids, Penelope Family Violence Center, Athens Penelopian Day Care Center, Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Saint Basil's Academy.
In 1977, a kidney dialysis machine and other pieces of medical equipment were purchased for the National Children's Medical Center. In 1998, the Chapter contributed to the Father Moses Liver Transplant Fund through Saint Sophia Cathedral. In 2000, the Chapter contributed generously to the Athens Earthquake Fund. Since 9/11, the Chapter has raised money for the Twin Towers victims and Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, which was destroyed on 9/11. In 2004 and 2005, the Chapter contributed to the Tsunami Relief and Hurricane Katrina Relief Funds.
Local charities have included the Alzheimer's Association, Arthritis Foundation, ALS Association, National Center for Children and Families, Lions Club Eye Bank, Maids of Athena Muses Chapter 22, Nina Hyde Cancer Center, Saint Sophia Cathedral, Greek Orthodox Church of Saint George and Toys for Tots. Each year, the Chapter provides a scholarship to the local AHEPA Awards Committee, which includes several Chapter members.
The Chapter also donates toiletries and paper products to The Shepherd's Table, a homeless shelter in Silver Spring, Maryland; Rainbow Place, a homeless shelter for women in Rockville, Maryland; and the Penelope Family Violence Center in Mobile, Alabama. Women's clothing and accessories have also been donated to "Suited for Change," of Washington, D.C., which provides assistance to low income women to enable them to increase their job skills and become economically independent.
Hermione Chapter No. 11 meets at 7:30 P.M. on the second Tuesday of September, October, November, April and May at Saint George Greek Orthodox Church in Bethesda, MD. In December, January, February and March, the Chapter meets at 1:00 P.M. on the second Saturday at Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Washington, D.C.
