AHEPA is opposed to S.3283, “The Exclusive Citizenship Act of 2025,” announced Supreme President E. Chris Kaitson.
The bill, introduced in the U.S. Senate by Senator Bernie Moreno (R-OH), would prohibit U.S. citizens from holding dual citizenship. Additionally, any dual U.S. citizen who does not relinquish their foreign citizenship within one year will be stripped of their U.S. citizenship.
If enacted, the bill would directly impact American Hellenic community members, forcing them to relinquish their Greek or Cypriot citizenship and significantly disrupting or ceasing their ability to conduct business, buy land, travel, visit family or remain connected to their lineal homelands.
Furthermore, the bill does not include any exceptions or limitations based on age, marriage or country of citizenship and its relationship to the United States. This not only undermines the normal citizenship processes involved in marriage or having children, but also the relationships the U.S. has built with countless other countries around the world.
AHEPA stands for dual citizenship as a means to connect U.S. citizens to their ancestral homelands and to pursue global mobility with ease, as well as business or economic opportunities and political participation.
“In our view, dual citizenship is not dual loyalty, and in your communications and interactions with your U.S. Senators, we urge you to advise them against this alarming and isolationist bill that constrains a core ideal of this nation’s founding,” Kaitson said.
