In his Huffington Post column, "The Diaspora to the Rescue in Greece ... Well, Almost" (Jan. 2, 2012), Mr. Gregory C. Pappas states he was mistaken to think that the Greek Diaspora, and specifically organizations such as the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA), would provide assistance to Greece in its time of need especially around the holidays. Although it seems Mr. Pappas is looking for an immediate "here and now" or silver bullet solution to provide assistance to the people of Greece, I would like to present some of the philanthropic work conducted by AHEPA family chapters in Greece during the past year.

WASHINGTON - Supreme President Dr. John Grossomanides issued the following statement on the 71st anniversary of "OXI Day" when Greece issued a defiant "No" to the evils of fascism presented by the Axis powers, and instead, said "Yes" to freedom on October 28, 1940. The Greeks successfully fought back against the Italian army, pushing the invaders back into Albania after one week. It would prove to be a costly military campaign for the Axis power.

WASHINGTON - The American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA), a leading association for the nation's three million American citizens of Greek heritage, and Philhellenes, praised an agreement reached today between the Port Authority of New York/New Jersey and the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America regarding the rebuilding of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, which was destroyed in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, announced Supreme President Dr. John Grossomanides. According to a statement issued October 14, 2011 by the Port Authority, St. Nicholas will be rebuilt at 130 Liberty Street.
