WASHINGTON, DC —The membership of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA), a leading association for the nation’s 1.4 million American citizens of Greek ancestry, and Philhellenes, applauds the opening of the Ledra Street crossing in Nicosia, the last divided capital in Europe, announced National President Ike Gulas.

NEW YORK -- The President of Parliament of Greece, Dimitris Sioufas, and several members of parliament hosted a private meeting for Supreme President Ike Gulas Saturday on the sidelines of events surrounding the celebration of Greek Independence Day in New York City at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel.  The parliament members represented a diversity of political parties in Greece.

Greece, a key NATO ally and EU member, will oppose FYROM’s membership into NATO unless a mutually agreeable solution is found by this week’s NATO Summit in Bucharest.  It will become increasingly difficult for Greece to negotiate a mutually acceptable name with FYROM should the latter become a NATO member and eventually an EU member.

Dr. Nicholas T. Mannos, age 86, Veteran US Army WWII, beloved husband of Dena Mannos, nee Smyrnis; loving father of Tim (Lynette) Mannos, Denise (Bill) Drucker, Peter (Julie) Mannos and Suzanne (Harold) Symanietz; devoted son of the late Thomas and Panagiota Mannos; proud grandfather of Matt, Aaron (Sarah) Mannos, Ben (Chris) Drucker, Katy, Amy and Megan Drucker, Nick and Alex Mannos and Katy Symanietz; dear brother of George T. Brother James “Jim” Demet

Steve Kolidakis Chapter 155 - Hopewell, VA

Brother James “Jim” Demet, 72, of Hopewell passed away Monday, March 10, 2008 at his residence.  Jim was a computer analyst, retired from the United States Government and a member of St. Elpis Greek Orthodox Church. Jim was a past president and treasurer of AHEPA Steve Kolidakis Chapter 155, Hopewell. He also served in many positions on the St. Elpis Parish Council including terms as President. He graduated from Wright College with a BS in Mathematics, and later received a Master of  Mathematics from University of Illinois.  He also served in the Greek National Air force. Jim was a real grass roots AHEPAN for 40 years and seldom missed a meeting.  He chaired a number of chapter committees and even played Santa Claus for the community children at the AHEPA Christmas Party.  

He is survived by his wife, Nickie Demet, two sons, William Demet and wife Bethany, Socratees Demet and wife, Kimberly, daughter, Leia King and husband, Bryan, five grandchildren, James, Kristine and Rebekah Flaherty, Demetri, Olivia and William Demet, Jr., great grandchild, Olivia Demet and sister, Lelika Demetrakes.

Capitol Hill Day, Meetings with Members of Congress Well Received
