Public Policy

AHEPA is the nation’s largest and oldest American-based, Greek heritage grassroots organization with a voice in U.S. CapitolWashington.  Our mission, heritage, and community service programs guide our agenda for the 110th Congress.  It includes:

  • strengthening relations with Greece, including its designation as a Visa Waiver Program nation.
  • securing religious freedom and protection for the Ecumenical Patriarchate,
  • promoting continued efforts for a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem,
  • advancing reconciliation and rapprochement in the Eastern Mediterranean,
  • commemorating Constantino Brumidi, an Italian immigrant of Greek heritage known as the “Artist of the U.S. Capitol,” with the Congressional Gold Medal, and
  • ensuring proper federal funding for Cooley’s Anemia (Thalassemia) research, a deadly blood disease affecting people of Mediterranean descent.

We also encourage members of Congress to join the Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Affairs, an active, bipartisan body in Congress, working to enhance and further develop the United States’ relationship with Greece and the Republic of CyprusRead the Cyprus and Hellenic Affairs Committee 2008 Report   New!

Congressional Scorecard

It is a pleasure to present the 2004 AHEPA Congressional Scorecard on Greek-American Issues for the 108th Congress of the United States.

The scorecard is based on legislative initiatives and positions taken during the 108th Congress only.  The Overall Evaluation of each member of Congress was determined by actions taken by them by December 30, 2004.  This is the final evaluation for the 108th Congress.

While we understand that much of the business of politics happens “behind the scenes,” we have made our evaluation based upon what is on the record according to the THOMAS Web site, http://thomas.loc.gov

Please download the 2004 Scorecard Key and Legend.  It provides a brief synopsis of the legislation or letters that were included for evaluation in the scorecard.  The actual 2004 Scorecard 108th Congress is in a separate Microsoft Excel document.

We encourage you to use the information presented in the scorecard to make informed decisions especially if Greek-American issues are at the forefront of your concern.  Also, we encourage you to contact your elected representatives to ask them about their positions on these issues.  Inquire why they did not co-sponsor a bill or sign a position letter.  Finally, it is always helpful to thank and congratulate our representatives if they are supportive of the issues.  For this purpose, the scorecard also contains the contact information of each member of Congress.
