This Week For Greeks! - Vol.3 Issue 5 - Monday, February 9, 2009
A Message from the Supreme President
Brothers, Sisters and Friends:
Our members join AHEPA because of one or more of many exciting programs, projects, and activities it has to offer. One might find fulfillment in fund raising for Cooley's Anemia research, chairing a scholarship committee, participating in athletic events, or just simply enjoying the fellowship. I would like to update you on another vital component of our mission-civic responsibility. Keeping the issues of the American Hellenic community on the radar screens of key audiences in Washington is a vital service AHEPA provides. One way in which we perform this service is through our members. We work to educate elected officials about these issues based upon positions that are in the best interests of the United States.
Carrying out the duties of the civic responsibility facet of AHEPA's mission is our Cyprus & Hellenic Affairs Committee. The committee is chaired by Past Supreme President Dr. Spiro J. Macris. I'm pleased to report that the Committee has been meeting periodically via conference calls, planning and strategizing in order to meet two primary goals: 1) to grow AHEPA's Congressional Grassroots Contact Network, and 2) to help grow the bipartisan Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Issues, which currently has 133 members. The Committee will be outreaching to our local communities in an effort find individuals -- Ahepan or non-Ahepan, Hellene or Philhellene -- who would like to join the AHEPA Congressional Grassroots Contact Network as a way of fulfilling one's civic responsibility. Ultimately, our long-term goal is to identify at least one contact for each of the 535 Congressional Districts, or come as close as possible to it. I applaud this ambitious effort, and the Committee needs everyone's help to reach its goal. Therefore, I strongly encourage you to join the Congressional Grassroots Contact Network-it's free to join. Please send an email with your interest to join to policy@ahepa.org.
Fraternally,

Ike Gulas, Supreme President

Greek of the Week!
Ponzi Scheme Whistleblower Harry Markopolos
This week a Greek-American made news for exposing one of the largest scandals to shake the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in recent years. Markopolos, a former securities industry executive and fraud investigator, known for his intelligence and integrity, testified before the House Financial Services subcommittee, providing evidence on a Ponzi Scheme involving titans from Wall Street -- and potentially the SEC, itself (see above LA Times article).
This takes guts!
Markopolos is being heralded by many U.S. lawmakers as a "modern day Greek hero" and we should all be proud of him as a member of our community. He represents everything AHEPA and Hellenic culture stands for: education, honor, integrity and courage. Please join us in honoring Harry Markopolos as this week's Greek of the Week!
Who's Your Greek of the Week?
There are many heroes in our community who often sadly go unrecognized. You can help. Nominate someone to be AHEPA's Greek of the Week! Simply email a short, detailed nomination, along with a digital photo of them to webmaster@ahepa.org.
