This Week For Greeks! - Vol.3 Issue 7 - Monday, February 23, 2009 A Message from the Supreme President
Brothers, Sisters and Friends: It gives me great pleasure to welcome United States Congressman Scott Garrett (R-NJ) to the roster of membership in the Order of AHEPA. I had the pleasure of visiting the Congressman in his Washington, DC office last year and discussing those issues which AHEPA seeks to promote on Capitol Hill. The Congressman joins a list of distinguished public servants who have called themselves brothers in our historic organization. I would also like to congratulate the brothers of Ramapo Chapter 453 for adding such distinguished member to their roster of members. As you will read below, I will be travelling to Washington, DC this week to attend President Obama's State of the Union Address. This truly is a tribute to the long standing respect exhibited to the Order of AHEPA in our Nation's Capitol. I would be remiss if I did not call attention to this week's Greek of the Week, Steve Chiotakis. He hails from my hometown of Birmingham, AL and has excelled in his chosen career of broadcast journalism. Stevie we are all proud of you back home. In closing, as we embark on the Lenten season I would like to extend to all of you my wishes for a most joyous Pascha. Fraternally, A Message from the Executive Director
Brothers, Sisters and Friends: I am pleased and proud to update you on AHEPA's current events. One of the most impressive facets in AHEPA is the government relations portion of our work. Together with our government relations team, AHEPA is constantly positioning our chapters and officers to be on the forefront of Greek American issues. It is with this pride that I report to you that our Supreme President, Ike Gulas, has been invited to attend the special Joint Session of Congress tomorrow night. Supreme President Gulas will be in attendance when the President of the United States make his first address to Congress. Whether a Republican or Democrat, we can take pride that AHEPA was present. In 1940, under the leadership of Supreme President George Vournas (close friend and advisor to President Franklin D. Roosevelt) AHEPA was one of the country's leading organizations promoting American ideals and fostering patriotism. When World War II commenced, the AHEPA War Bond sales program elevated the stature of the Greek American community throughout the Halls of Congress. Today, AHEPA continues this tradition, as an American organization, advocating programs and issues which open doors for us on Capitol Hill (see Rep. Garrett feature below). AHEPA represents the Greek-American community in our nation. This invitation to our Supreme President to attend the President's Address to a joint session of Congress is a testament that our organization maintains its important role in the fabric of mainstream American politics.
