This Week For Greeks! - Vol.3 Issue 10 - Monday, March 16, 2009
A Message from the Supreme President
Brothers, Sisters and Friends:
Spring is always a busy and exciting time for AHEPA. Between the many community events and the holy season of Pascha, the next three months are filled with opportunities to celebrate our Greek-American heritage as well as our Greek-Orthodox faith.
Our celebrations start next week with Greek Independence Day on March 25 where our many chapters participate in local and statewide commemorations of the day. On April 4, AHEPA will be honored at this year's Hermes Expo in Atlantic City, and also honored at a reception at the Embassy of Greece on April 6. April also brings us the Great Lent, Holy Week and Pascha, an annual celebration of life and rebirth.
The third Sunday of May brings us to AHEPA Day as proclaimed by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. This year, in addition to AHEPA Day Church-related activities each chapter holds, we're inviting every member to join us for an aggressive membership recruitment weekend starting with "AHEPA Spring Rush" on Friday, May 15 and AHEPA's new "Hug-A-Greek Day" on Saturday, May 16 -- both of which we will be promoting through the Internet. As a reminder, please visit the AHEPA website and newly added Facebook fan page to learn more about our internet outreach. You can also participate in our worthy charitable programs such as Cooley's Anemia and Education.
Finally, on Memorial Day, AHEPA will pay its respects on behalf of a grateful American Hellenic community to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for democracy, liberty, and freedom at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. Since 1924, Ahepans have returned annually to Arlington to honor our nation's fallen heroes.
Spring and Pascha are symbolic of re-birth and growth. For AHEPA, these themes compel us to pass our mission to promote Hellenism to the next generation of Ahepans and to grow our Order into the strong and powerful community organization our founders envisioned. Please join us in making that vision a reality.
Once again, I wish all of you the best during your upcoming conferences.
Fraternally,

Ike Gulas, Supreme President

Greek of the Week!
Radio Olympus Founder George Moshos
This week, AHEPA is proud to honor one of our own brothers who has become a leader in the news radio. For almost 30 years, brother George Gus Moshos worked as a production manager at WTOP Radio in Washington DC, and last year he launched a new program for the station, "Radio Olympus" and serves as the program's producer.
Brother Moshos's work mirrors the mission of AHEPA and greatly advances our work promoting Hellenism. Radio Olympus is a weekly Greek-American community radio program. The show features news from Greece, interviews with prominent Greek-Americans, Greek music, teachings about the Orthodox Church, and local church and community announcements.
Brother George was born in Arlington, Virginia, to Gus and Irene Moshos and has been an active member of the AHEPA community since he was 17. He is a member of the Peter N. Derzis Chapter 438. He recently started his 35th year as an Ahepan. Brother George was raised in St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church, which he still attends and has held many leadership roles within the church throughout his life. From 2004-2008, George was President of St. Katherine, during which time he oversaw the complete renovation of the church's interior, including all new iconography. Currently he serves as the GOYA basketball coach and chairman of the annual festivals, and helps with many other special events at the church.
Brother Moshos's recent work through Radio Olympus is providing an invaluable service to the Greek-American community of our Nation's Capital and he continues to make both the AHEPA and our community proud. For his leadership and service, please join us in honoring Brother George Gus Moshos as AHEPA's Greek of the Week!
