This Week For Greeks! - Vol.3 Issue 11 - Monday, March 23, 2009

A Message from the Supreme President

Supreme President Ike Gulas

Brothers, Sisters and Friends:

This week, we will celebrate the 188th Anniversary of Greece's Independence from the Ottoman Empire. It is a time to reflect upon the democratic values and ideals conceived by the ancient Greeks that inspired America's Forefathers to liberty and the leaders of Greek Independence who founded the modern Greek state.

I wish to commend all our members who will be helping to commemorate a salient moment in our Hellenic heritage by marching in parades throughout major cities around the globe; hoisting Greek flags over state capitols or municipal buildings, or organizing youth programs in your local communities where plays will be performed or poems recited by our younger generations.

I look forward to celebrating Greek Independence Day for the first time with President Barack H. Obama, along with His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios, AHEPA family leaders, and dignitaries of the Greek-American community at The White House on Wednesday.

On a separate note, as we look forward into 2009, please begin planning to attend the 87th Annual AHEPA Supreme Convention in San Francisco, June 29 to July 5. For more information, please visit www.ahepa.org/convention.

Fraternally,
Ike Gulas Signature
Ike Gulas, Supreme President

Greek of the Week!

Admiral James G. Stavridis

Admiral James G. Stavridis
AHEPA was thrilled last week to hear the news that Admiral James G. Stavridis was selected by President Obama to serve as NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe. Our Order is extremely proud of Admiral Stavridis's outstanding accomplishments, and are confident, upon his confirmation, that he will serve our nation and lead the Alliance with excellence and distinction.

Admiral Stavridis is currently the Commander of the United States Southern Command and has served his country with honor. Adm. Stavridis has served as a strategic and long-range planner on the staffs of the Chief of Naval Operations and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. At the start of the Global War on Terror, he was selected as the director of the Navy Operations Group, Deep Blue. He has also served as the executive assistant to the Secretary of the Navy and the senior military assistant to the Secretary of Defense.

In 2006 Admiral Stavridis received the 2006 AHEPA Medal of Freedom Award at the 84th Supreme Convention in Hollywood, FL. This is but one of the many various decorations and awards Adm. Stavridis has received, including the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal and five awards of the Legion of Merit. He is author or co-author of several books on naval ship handling and leadership, including Command at Sea and Destroyer Captain.

AHEPA is certain Admiral Stavridis's nomination will soon be approved by Congress and is proud that a member of the Greek-American Community will be serving our country as the new Commander of NATO. For his lifelong service to God and country, and for being a strong role model for our youth, please join us in honoring Admiral James G. Stavridis as AHEPA's Greek of the Week!
