This Week For Greeks! - Vol.3 Issue 12 - Friday, April 3, 2009

A Message from the Supreme President

Supreme President Ike Gulas

Brothers, Sisters and Friends:

This past week saw the AHEPA Family participate in Greek Independence Events throughout the entire AHEPA domain at the chapter, district and national levels.

I am pleased and honored to inform everyone that Ambassador Alexandros Mallias of the Hellenic Republic is hosting a reception in honor of the Order of AHEPA on Monday April 6 at 7PM at the Greek Embassy. Please RSVP directly to the embassy at (202) 939-1311.

In Washington, President Barack Obama hosted a celebration at the White House commemorating the 188th anniversary of Greek Independence. Although invited, I respectfully chose not to attend this White House celebration due to what I believed was a failure to recognize the importance of including the entire AHEPA Family Leadership. As a result, I wrote the President expressing my concern regarding this oversight and as of yet have not received a reply. AHEPA Headquarters and I have received countless emails and phone calls from our members across the country as well as other Greek American organizational leaders who agree that AHEPA, the oldest and largest Greek American organization, should have been duly included in the attendance at this important occasion. As a result, I have included in this newsletter a petition which I am asking our members and friends to sign so we may forward it to the White House in the coming days.

This coming weekend I am honored to be joined by my Supreme Lodge in attending the annual Hermes Expo and Banquet at the Tropicana Resort and Casino where AHEPA's leadership is being recognized for its contribution in promoting Hellenic principles and ideals. I urge all of the AHEPA family members to attend not only the banquet but the exposition which will take place in Atlantic City, NJ April 2-6th. I look forward to seeing all our District 5 brothers as well as those who are coming from other parts of the country.

Fraternally,
Ike Gulas Signature
Ike Gulas, Supreme President

Honorary Greek of the Week!

President Barack Obama

U.S. President Barack Obama
After hearing news that President Obama is amending his European trip schedule to accommodate a meeting with Greek Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis, AHEPA decided to break tradition and honor President Barack Obama, a non-Greek, as our Greek of the Week.

President Barack Obama has been a longtime champion of issues of concern to the Greek-American community. During his tenure in the U.S. Senate he cosponsored several pieces of legislation to strengthen relations between the U.S. and Greece, and has voiced strong concern about the limitations on religious freedoms placed upon the Ecumenical Patriarchate. For this he achieved a voting record of 90% by the Order of AHEPA.

For remaining strong in his support of the Greek American community, and for instilling a new sense of hope for not only our community, but all communities, please join us in honoring President Barack Obama as this week's Greek of the Week!

Who's Your Greek of the Week?
There are many heroes in our community who often sadly go unrecognized. You can help. Nominate someone to be AHEPA's Greek of the Week! Simply email a short, detailed nomination, along with a digital photo of them to webmaster@ahepa.org.
