A Message from the Supreme President

Supreme President Ike Gulas

Brothers, Sisters and Friends:

As you may have read, or heard, AHEPA was recognized and honored on two different occasions during the past week.

First, AHEPA received the 2009 Hermes Award for its service to community and charitable deeds at the Hermes International Expo in Atlantic City on April 4. I was proud to be accompanied by many members of the Supreme Lodge who were present to help me accept this honor on behalf of AHEPA. It was great to see so many AHEPA family members from New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania present. I commend Brother Paul Kotrosios for his efforts to build the Hermes International Expo into the success it has become, helping to build a bridge of commerce and trade between the United States and Greece.

Secondly, His Excellency Alexandros Mallias, ambassador of the Hellenic Republic to the U.S., and Mrs. Mallias, hosted a reception at the Embassy of the Hellenic Republic in honor of AHEPA on April 6. Indeed it was a privilege for AHEPA to be recognized for its organizational strength and its mission by such a distinguished leader of the community. There, too, I was joined by Supreme Lodge members as well as a great display of support from Ahepans from the Metro DC area. We look forward to returning the favor by co-hosting a dinner in Ambassador Mallias' honor in May with AHI.

In retrospect, it was a special week for the organization because such accolades are earned from the ground-up. It is because of the hard work, dedication, and volunteerism performed by our members in the community on a daily basis that I have the honor to represent AHEPA when it is acknowledged with these awards. So thank you to our members for making all of this possible.

Finally, we look forward, never resting on our laurels. There is much work to do. Last week, I distributed an electronic communication encouraging our network to support, however way possible, our fellow citizens and friends, who are suffering from devastating natural disasters. Please do what you can to help.

Moreover, we are busy organizing our 87th Supreme Convention in San Francisco. This will be a very significant occasion as we will be celebrating the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Daughters of Penelope. Please visit www.ahepa.org/convention to make your reservations and to file your registration. We look forward to seeing you in the City by the Bay!

Finally, listed below in the News from AHEPA section, I have asked each and every member of the AHEPA to sign the AHEPA petition. In light of the recent "mishandling" of the AHEPA invitations to the Greek Independence Day celebrations at the White March 25, AHEPA wrote a petition which I have asked all our members to sign. We are collected the signatures and will be forwarding them to the White House. Stand up and be heard! Sign the petition today!

Fraternally,
Ike Gulas Signature
Ike Gulas, Supreme President

Greek of the Week!

Author John Katsaros

Author John Katsaros
With Memorial Day approaching, the stories and sacrifices of the many Ahepans and Americans, who have served our country in the armed forces, occupy a special place in our hearts and minds. This week, AHEPA honors brother John Katsaros of Chapter 39 in Haverhill, MA (AHEPA District 8), who not only served our country with honor, but recently authored a book about his experience as a POW in WWII.

Brother Katsaros' book, Code Burgundy: The Long Escape is fascinating. It tells of John's true story of being shot down behind enemy lines and held a prisoner by the German Gestapo. For many years Brother Katsaros was sworn to secrecy by the government, but through his book he now invites all of us to share in his experience. Brother John also speaks often to community and veteran groups about his book and experiences as a young Greek-American airman.

For his long affiliation with AHEPA, and for his service to the United States during war time, please join us in honoring Brother and Author John Katsaros as this week's Greek of the Week!
