Supreme President Travel LogDear Brothers: Supreme President Ike Gulas continued on his visits to the AHEPA chapters -- making good on his promise to continue the caravans which were so popular last year. The Supreme President began his visit by attending a chapter social at the Good Friendship Chapter 63 in Akron Ohio on November 5, 2008. Upon arrival at the AHEPA clubhouse, the Supreme President was greeted by Past Supreme President John Economou. President Gulas was thrilled to see 10 AHEPA chapters at the packed event. Ahepans from Akron, Massilon, Youngstown, Canton, North Royalton, Warren, Louisville, Ky., Columbus, Cleveland, and from neighboring District 4 (Pennsylvania) all joined in the festivities. Supreme President Gulas spoke briefly about the state of the AHEPA and was received with thunderous applause. As part of the event, the Supreme President made special presentations to all three Past Supreme Presidents. District 11 Governor Carl Hollister coordinated with the area chapters and spoke briefly about the District Programs. On Thursday, November 6, 2008 a special luncheon was hosted by the AHEPA Columbus Chapter 139. There, President Gulas was joined by newly reelected Congressman Zack Space. Congressman Space, a close friend and member of AHEPA, was proud to be in attendance and spoke to the importance of AHEPA's role in the Greek American community. President Gulas welcomed all the visiting local dignitaries, including state representatives. After lunch at the "Happy Greek," the Supreme President was invited to the state capitol for a private tour of the both houses of the state government. A special meeting with Governor Ted Strickland rounded out this exciting afternoon. In the evening, a special initiation was scheduled in Warren, Ohio Chapter 88. Chapter President Gus Polychronis welcomed all the area chapters to the meeting. Supreme Governor Phil Giavasis and Supreme Governor John Mesogitis assisted. District 11 Governor Carl Hollister also spoke that evening. Past Supreme President and Chairman of the Board of Trustees Frank Manios recognized every member in the chapter hall, and welcomed the new initiates to the AHEPA family. In retrospect, the visit to Akron, Columbus and Warren was a tremendous success, where more than 200 AHEPA members got to meet with AHEPA's leadership. District 11 seems to be in good hands and congratulations to District Governor Hollister, Past Supreme President Frank Manios, and John Economou for their devotion, assistance and support.
AHEPA is the largest Greek-American association in the world with chapters in the United States, Canada, Greece, Cyprus, and sister chapters in Australia and New Zealand. It was established in 1922 by visionary Greek Americans to protect Hellenes from prejudice originating from the KKK, and in its history, AHEPA joined with the NAACP and B'nai B'rith International to fight discrimination. |
